Bachlor Party!

Hi all. Been a while so I thought I should just start up this blog again and post about last weekend's bachlor party!

Left on Friday morning and headed up to Redding, CA with Sean Gray and Amit Wason. Met up with Jeremy Austin and Simon Orchover that evening and had a great time and great dinner in Redding. After a relatively peaceful evening at the Howards (thanks much to the Howard's for lending us their house) we departed Saturday morning early for Happy Camp CA to meet with the kayaking crew for a kayaking and camping trip with Momentum River Rafting Company!

On the way up to the cast off point in Happy Camp!

We spent the first day getting to know the guides and getting to know our kayaks. The kayaks were inflatable kayaks that worked great!

We were setup with a wetsuit, lifejacket, and overcoat. The water wasn't too cold but the extra layers did help. We hit a few gnarly rapids; I believe the wildest one was a category 3+ rapid called "Dragon's Tooth". We actually handled it quite well! All of us did flip the kayaks at least once with the exception of Jeremy who was able to upright the entire trip. We rafted down the Klamath River until about 3:30 PM and setup camp along the river at a sandy beach area. Our awesome guides setup their "kitchen" and cooked an awesome meal of carnitas, homemade corn tortillas and mashes potatoes! We opened a great bottle of GoldenEye Pinot Noir for dinner and ended with some fruit, chocolate and a Single Malt Glenrothes Scotch thanks to Sean!

Second day consisted of a cast off and another day of rafting down the Klamath. No one flipped off thier kayaks even though we did hit some awsome rapids!

Overall it was an awsome trip and we're looking forward to more rafting trips like this again!

Guides setting up the kitchen!

Sean and Amit enjoying GoldenEye Pinot with the plastic glasses.

I know it's been a while and KJP keeps harping on me about posting. I need to spend time to do so and I just haven't had any.

Interestingly, a while back I posted a piece about how to setup your iPhone to your Yahoo small business account via IMAP and oddly this gets the MOST hits! Funny... If you search google on

"yahoo small buisness IMAP iPhone" it's like the third search item! :-) Anyways. I need to post more and I have so much to post but so little to post on.

Work wise is good. Hey I'm still working which is great in this horrible market. Heather and I are still doing well. Wedding plans are still underway but most of the planning has been done, just a few loose ends.

I'm cycling still quite a bit and getting stronger which is nice and I have started to intertwine swimming into the training mix which is a great addition since it was once my biggest and strongest athletic passion in my younger years.

More later.

Last weekend

Weekend was nice. I really need to be more diligent about taking photos. Heather and me went to a Persian New Years (Noruz) celebration at my parent's house in Walnut Creek. HMH's parents, sister and brother in law also joined which was great. The company was great and the food was of course fantastic. I brought my camera but didn't take photos. My problem is I tend to spend more itme enganging with people and everytime I think about taking photos, I realize how I have to disengange with people for a while to take photos so I don't. It's especially more difficult when there are people at the party who are really guests of mine (Heather's parents) so I feel somewhat obligated to make sure they're taken care of.

Heather and I went on a bike ride yesterday. I felt horrible because it was a bit more than Heather should have done being as it was her first time back on a bike since last year. We did the Chilleno loop out in the Petaluma/Novato/Marin farmlands which came out to a little over 30 miles. It wasn't so much just the distance but also the rolling hills. For me the route is completly doable but she really wanted a leasurly ride on Sunday.

The problem with the area we live in is there aren't a lot of simply flat areas. There were a lot of flat roads back in Walnut Creek that we could ride on for miles. In Petaluma, almost any direction you go from the house, you'll eventually hit some hills. I thought this ride had the most stretch of flat land areas that anywhere. Although we really should have simply rode up towards SSU and back, I realize there is less incline that way. I felt horrible, she struggled up quite a few hills and was completly discouraged.

I profusely apologized and I think she understood. I was just so ecstatic that she came out on the bike with me and didn't want her to feel she can't ever ride with me again. It meant the world to me that we went on a ride and it really didn't have to be some rigorous training ride. I told her I promised her the next rides we'll do will be much easier. She was sore when we got back but she did it. HMH and her red and orange Bianchi.

I'll probably be riding after work today...

Sunday and yesterday's Route

On Sunday I took a nice 40+ mile ride around in the countryside of Petaluma on the infamous Chilleno Valley. It felt great and the weather was great as well (the wind was cold but I had a jacket).

And then yesterday after work I rode... This was the route from door to door. Took a little over an hour which isn't bad. Eventually I'll push up the weekday ries to 1.5 -2 hours. Started at the house and made my way up to SSU and back in a round about way.

Here's a link to google maps of the general area

http://local.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=38.270263,-122.688789&spn=0.189488,0.31929&z=12

I'm not clear whether or not I will ride tonight, hit the gym for a resistance training or break today. Tomorrow evening is out as I have a work related obligation to attend to so I'm trying to compensate today.

Yahoo Small Buisness Mail - IMAP with the iPhone

Ok so I had a hell of a time figuring out how to configure my iPhone to work with Yahoo's IMAP servers. I had read quite a few sites claiming that Yahoo does not support IMAP for small buisness class accounts. What? Why would they allow IMAP for free yahoo accounts and yet pay buisness web hosting accounts the service is not provided? Well I assumed it has something to do with the IMAP service not fully being tested. I noticed that when Yahoo launched thier new Webmail interface, it took almost two to three months before Emaild web mail had the ability to use the new interface. This was because Yahoo beta tests new features on free subscribers. This I assume is the same thing...

BUT! It is there, you just have to figure out how to get it.

Yes, you can configure your iPhone to access your domain's yahoo mail through POP and SMTP. I did this for the last 2 months I've had the phone. But I realized that IMAP is a lot faster and it's synced with the servers PLUS it's a PUSH mail service which I like.

Why did I try to figure this out? 1. I'm a geek and I'm persistant to find solutions to everything and 2. IMAP access has better performance with the Yahoo servers and 3. It's push mail.

SO how to configure it?

1. Settings Icon on the Phone

2. Mail

3. Add Account

4. Don't choose Yahoo, choose 'Other'. Interestingly if you setup your email with the Yahoo account it works. I did this and setup my address as emailaddy (at) email (dot) net (replace the 'at' with @ and 'dot' with . and use your own email user name address) with my passowrd and I was able to get mail and it synched with yahoo's IMAP servers. BUT I soon realized I had a problem SENDING mail. This is because you need to use SMTP for outbound mail and you can't configure that properly on the phone with Yahoo.

5. So use this configuration

Name: You name you want people to see

Address: Your email address

Description: What you want the phone to display in your email account lists

Incoming Host: imap.mail.yahoo.com

Username: your email address hosted by yahoo

Password: Your password

Outgoing Host: smtp.bizmail.yahoo.com:25

username: your email address

Password: your password

Save it. It will try to save for a while and it may (did for me) ask you to try to attempt to Save it without SSL? Click 'Yes'! Then it will be "thinking" for a while. Don't worry, this may take a LONG while but eventually it should save off successfully.

That's it! You should now have IMAP access with push mail on your yahoo small buisness hosted web solution.

Works great for me!

EDIT - 3/13/2009 ---

I've had a SLEW of people hit my blog specifically on this topic. So to clear up some confusion, I should note that this solution does not work on WIFI so all you iPod Touch users, this isn't going to work. Sorry! I personally have to shut off Wifi to get my IMAP mail from my personal yahoo small business account.

Hope this helps!

I'm so behind here!

These days I'm extremely busy and life has just been really been a series of major decisions one after the other. Heather and I are doing well which is great. I need to get some photos posted.

I'm back to training...well at least somewhat. It's tough to get training time in during the winter season due to lack of light in the day and bad weather. I ride when i can, have amped up my strength training and go to spinning classes when the weather is just to rough to take it outside. I still want to try for Vineman 2008. Well at least the half Vineman, I don't think I'll even get close t being ready for the full Vineman at least not this year...

Working in Sonoma these days which has been quite nice. I'm certaintly not used to working in such a small town. I worked for years in the heart of the financial district of san Francisco which provded a wide assortment of variety with easy walking access. It was certaintly easy when Heather lived in the Sunset district and I would spend all week with her and take the MUNI in. As much as how I would complain about MUNI, I actually miss it. I even miss her old neighborhood on 14th Avenue and Kirkham right up the road from the Irving, Judah, and the Golden Gate park that I would jog in from time to time.

hmm...the holidays are approaching and I still need to finish up the christmas shopping.

My uncle is having his usual New Years Even party that should be a blast. It will be interesting to see people who I typically only see at his party once a year.

I would suggest that if it's your first time here to visit some of the older entires on the right hand side of the page...

50.38 miles today up in Santa Rosa CA all along River Road. It was great. Rolling hills along with vinyards and wineries on either side all the way from the 101 highway to the town of Duncan's Mills and back. Stopped at Gold Coast coffee and picked up a 1/2 pound of coffee to bring back as well. Started off at 9 AM and made it back a little after noon. Great ride...
Lagging!

Yes I've been lagging updating this blog. So much has happened simply in the last couple months. Due to what I think is the sensative nature of publically writing in this medium, I'm waiting for a couple aspects of my life to settle down a little bit before I post about the recent events. Nothing nessesarily "bad", just simply hectic as I try to juggle quite a few things at the same time. I'm hoping that life will settle down a bit for both me and Heather.

Hopefully by next week there I will know enough to be able write up a decent entry. Not sure who actually reads these but....
